Roof Inspection Checklist for Homeowners

From the ground, a few times a year
Look along the roofline for any obviously missing, cracked or slipped tiles or slates.
Check gutters for sagging, overflow marks, or debris build-up.
Look at chimney stacks for cracked or crumbling mortar.
Check external walls for damp staining below roof level, which can indicate water tracking down from above.
From inside the property
Check ceilings, especially on the top floor, for discolouration or damp patches.
If you have loft access, look for daylight, damp timber, or staining — without walking further than is safe on the joists.
Note any musty smells, which can indicate trapped moisture.
After severe weather
It's sensible to do a quick ground-level check after any storm or high winds, looking for obvious displaced tiles, debris, or new staining.
When to bring in a professional
